A plea for consolidation in the processing sector of the dairy industry has been made on the eve of the two-day Dairy Event which opens at the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham this morning.

David Cotton, the chairman of the event organisers, the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers, says smaller processors need to amalgamate or go out of business to strengthen the industry’s negotiating power with supermarkets.

Only 15% of milk producers in England and Wales have been given the opportunity of signing up to a dedicated supply contract with a supermarket, leaving the remaining 85% to struggle with the vagaries of the market place.

An EU survey showed there were only 68 significant milk processors in England. Five handle 92% of the liquid milk market while 80% of cheese is manufactured by nine firms.

“This begs the question – what are the other 54 companies doing?” said Mr Cotton. “No wonder the big five supermarkets don’t want to set up supply contracts for other dairy products when they have so many manufacturers falling over themselves to make sure their product has the biggest market share.”

The result is that ex-farm prices for milk can vary from 17p to 32p a litre, with producers in remote areas having very few options to sell their milk. Every 1p per litre change in price is worth pound(s)7500 a year to a 100-cow herd.

With a rising market for dairy products, Mr Cotton says now is the time for consolidation and for smaller manufacturers to merge or sell their businesses.

“Dairy farmers need a milk price sufficient to reinvest in their businesses to ensure long-term sustainability,” he says. “If dairy farmers continue to leave the industry at the current rate of 12 a week, processors will run out of critical mass and put themselves out of business.”

This week’s Dairy Event is the first to be held at the NEC following the decision to move from the National Agricultural Centre at Stoneleigh, Warwick, and, despite grumblings about the cost of stand space, exhibitors have booked a record 480 stands with 20% of them taking extra space.

All the indoor stands are in one exhibition hall, which has been divided into 12 coloured zones each representing a product sector. Livestock and breed societies occupy another hall covering two acres and there are 60 outside machinery and equipment stands.
